Baltimore’s Combat was a band I had checked out a little but but never fully dove into, but then this album dropped while I was on a trip in New York City, I decided to check it out and I could not stop listening. The energy in this album is infectious and it brings back that blistering fast pop-punk gallop that I haven’t heard done this well in a long time. The songwriting is also so insanely good and relatable. It’s also extremely cohesive, the reprise literally makes me transcend. Overall, it’s pretty much a flawless album. Youtube rapper turned multi-media artist extraordinaire Quadeca came through with a collection of leftovers from his previous album and songs that wouldn’t fit on his next project. But if we weren’t told that I swear no one would know. These “scraps” come together as one of the most cohesive and enveloping albums ever. The album ranges from soft singer-songwritery tunes to gazey folktronica, and experimental hip hop but still somehow come together sounding like one solid unit. No matter what style it is, you know, that’s Quadeca.

Washington D.C. duo Origami Angel just seem allergic to missing at this point. Whether it be their debut album Somewhere City which is already regarded as a classic in the scene, or their mega-fun sprawling double album GAMI GANG or now, their new album Feeling Not Found, Origami Angel are always delivering the bangers. There’s something so nostalgic about this album and it’s not just the video game aesthetic. This album feels like laying on the living room floor of your childhood home. This year has marked Knocked Loose’s meteoric rise to the forefront of the modern metal scene and beyond and it is well deserved. This album is a brutal experience, full to the brim with stanky breakdowns and panicked vocals. The songwriting is as well crafted as the soundscape and the somewhat consistent theme of religious trauma makes for a very fascinating listen. After a quick and out of nowhere teaser rollout, Tyler dropped CHROMAKOPIA. While the teasers seemed to point towards a high-concept album, the album took me by surprise by subverting expectations and using the titular St. Chroma character mostly as a metaphor for wearing a mask in general. This is a more meditative album than Tyler’s previous projects and while that may turn some people off, I think this is one of his best.

Noise Beneath the Floor is a dreamy rock band from Columbus, Ohio. WHAT IF I’M ALWAYS GONNA BE THIS WAY? Was the first thing I’d heard from the band and it blew away any expectation I had. This album is such a well put together dreamy indie rock/emo masterpiece. I love the vocals, the production style and the incredible songwriting. This one really packs a punch. Favorite tracks: fifteen months, washed, wasted potential

This was a late addition to the list after Kendrick surprise dropped this. I don’t think this is recency bias, at least I hope not, but this album is really really great. It has more of a loosey goosey vibe compared to the rest of his discography but he still manages to deliver on all fronts. The slower moments are great, the bouncy west coast bops are great, the bars are great, the flows are great. I won’t go on. This is great.

powerline traps airplane, the slowcore side project of 3AM (Who we’ll come back to later on in the list) dropped their debut self-titled album in September. This album feels like a warm fuzzy hug late at night when you’re scared. The lyricism evokes a distant nostalgia and the sound envelopes my brain. Ignoring his relationship drama and the fact that he’s probably an insufferable man-baby, I’ve been a fan of Zach Bryan’s writing since the beginning and this album felt like a nice cozy americana spin on his usual formula. A nice combination of his full band sound and more home-spun production harkening back to his early music.

Your Arms Are My Cocoon burst onto the scene in 2020 with their self-titled EP and I couldn’t wait for them to follow it up and wow did this live up to my hype. Mk.Gee is a modern guitar hero. He takes his unique and original guitar tone, his effortless and creative playing style, and makes one of the smoothest bedroom pop/alt r&b records of the year. It’s the perfect album for just chilling and staring at the ceiling.

A bleak sludgey soundscape with driving drums and visceral vocals that range from guttural screams to Viagra Boys-esque talk-singing. Denver emo band A Place For Owls come through with a meditative experience that sounds great on every front. The opening track is gorgeous with harmonies and strings that fades perfectly into the next track where the intensity picks up. The lyricism is incredible throughout. Jean Dawson is an artist I had checked out a little bit, just a song here and there. But when I heard this album I was caught off guard by how good it is. This album dives into a mix of indie pop, R&B, and hip-hop, all wrapped in 80s synths, dreamy production and striking lyrics.
